Meaning
have no choice but to… / cannot help but…
〜ざるを得ない means "I have no choice but to do it". The situation forces you; you would rather not, but there is no other option. The feeling is reluctant acceptance. It is a formal, slightly literary pattern built from the old negative ざる plus 得ない (cannot avoid).
Formal writing, news, business e-mail, essays, and careful speech. In everyday conversation people say 〜しかない or 〜するしかない instead. Typical situations: cancelling plans because of weather, accepting an unpleasant conclusion, admitting something is true.
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
Verb (ない form, drop ない) + ざるを得ない: 行かない → 行かざるを得ないする → せざるを得ない (irregular!)来る → 来(こ)ざるを得ないPolite: 〜ざるを得ません

- Why
- Being unable to hold back laughter is an inner urge → ずにはいられない. ざるを得ない implies being forced by circumstances, which sounds odd for laughing.
The reason is usually given first with 〜ため / 〜ので / 〜では / 〜以上, then ざるを得ない. It often softens criticism: 〜と言わざるを得ない ("I'm afraid I have to say that…"). Kanji spelling 得ない is standard; the reading is えない. Do not confuse with 得る (うる/える) meaning "possible".
JLPT N2 tips
On the exam
- The irregular せざるを得ない is a favourite exam item. If the verb is する and an option shows しざる, it is a distractor.
- In 文法形式の判断 it is often contrasted with ずにはいられない: circumstances → ざるを得ない; emotion → ずにはいられない.
- In 並べ替え, keep the three chunks (stem / ざるを / 得ない) together and attach the reason clause (〜ため) before them.
