〜ほかない / 〜よりほかない means "there is nothing else to do but X": every other option is gone, so X is the only path. 歩いて帰るほかない. The speaker accepts the situation with resignation. It is a slightly formal equivalent of 〜しかない.

Both speech and writing; よりほかない and ほかはない sound more formal or literary. Common in narratives and explanations of forced decisions. Everyday speech usually uses しかない.
