〜最中(に)

Meaning

right in the middle of

〜最中(に) means "right in the middle of…" and emphasizes that something (often an interruption) happened while an action was in full progress: the phone rang in the middle of the meal; the power went out during the meeting.

Both registers. It follows Vている (会議をしている最中に) or N + の (食事の最中に). Not for stative verbs (住んでいる・知っている) or for long periods; the action should be a concrete ongoing activity. Sentence-final 〜最中だ means "I'm right in the middle of it".

  • Distractors: 間に, うちに, 際に. A stative verb before the blank rules out 最中に.
