〜際(に)

Meaning

on the occasion of, when (formal)

〜際(に) means "on the occasion of, when" and is the formal equivalent of 〜時(に). It is used for special or official occasions (applying, visiting, leaving, an emergency), typically in announcements and business language.

書き言葉 and formal speech (announcements, notices, business letters). Verbs attach in Vる or Vた form; nouns take の (お帰りの際). It is not used for ordinary daily events (ご飯を食べる際 sounds odd) and never in casual chat.
