Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜最中に

"right in the middle of": one moment inside an activity, usually interrupted. うちに is about using a whole window of time. Compare side by side

  • 〜間に

Neutral "during". No feeling that the chance will disappear.

  • 〜前に

"Before" a specific event. 〜ないうちに adds the nuance "before it's too late".

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    温かいのうちに食べてください。
    ✓
    温かいうちに食べてください。
    Why
い-adjectives attach directly. の is only for nouns: 休みのうちに.
  • ✗
    忘れるうちにメモしよう。
    ✓
    忘れないうちにメモしよう。
    Why
"Before I forget" needs the negative: 〜ないうちに. 忘れるうちに would mean "while I am forgetting", which makes no sense.
  • ✗
    会議のうちに電話が鳴った。
    ✓
    会議の最中に電話が鳴った。/ 会議中に電話が鳴った。
    Why
うちに is for taking advantage of a window, not for a one-time interruption. Use 最中に or 〜中に.

〜うちに implies "before the situation ends/changes" and carries urgency; 〜間に is a neutral "during". 〜ないうちに = "before ~ happens". 〜ているうちに can also mean "in the course of doing, (a change happened)": 話しているうちに眠くなった. Sentence-final 〜うちに is not possible; it always leads into a main clause.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式, look for a second clause that would become impossible later (冷める, 暗くなる, 忘れる). That signals うちに over 間に.
  • If the blank is followed by 〜ないうちに, the main clause is something you want to do before a change: メモする, 帰る, 片付ける.
  • Distractors are usually 間に, 最中に and ところに. Ask: is the speaker using a limited chance (うちに) or reporting when something happened (間に)?
