Common mistakes

  • ✗
    練習すれば上手ほどなる。
    ✓
    練習すればするほど上手になる。
    Why
The same verb must be repeated: すれば + する + ほど. The result comes after ほど.
  • ✗
    安いなら安いほどいい。
    ✓
    安ければ安いほどいい。
    Why
い-adjectives use the ければ form. なら is for な-adjectives and nouns.
  • ✗
    静かなら静かほどいい。
    ✓
    静かなら静かなほどいい。
    Why
な-adjectives keep な before ほど, just as before a noun.

The same verb/adjective is repeated. In casual speech the ば-clause is sometimes dropped: 多いほどいい. Compare 〜につれて (gradual change along with another change), which does not use repetition. The ば-clause is sometimes shortened in speech: 早いほどいい (the sooner the better).

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式, the tell-tale sign is a repeated word: 〜すれば〜する〇〇. The blank is almost always ほど.
  • In 並べ替え, first join the pair V-ば + V-dictionary + ほど as one chunk, then place the result clause after it.
  • Watch the adjective type: 安ければ (い-adj) vs 静かなら (な-adj). A wrong ば-form is a typical trap.
