Similar grammar and the difference
The negative: "it's not that…". Denies a conclusion instead of drawing one. Compare side by side
〜はずだ
"Should be": the speaker's expectation before checking. わけだ is a conclusion after the facts are known.
"It means that…" also restates, but is more neutral and can report hearsay. わけだ carries the "now I understand" feeling. Compare side by side
Common mistakes
- ✗
- 三年も住んでいたのか。上手わけだ。
- ✓
- 上手なわけだ。
- Why
- 上手 is a な-adjective, so な is needed before わけ.
- ✗
- 明日は雨が降るわけだ。(as a forecast)
- ✓
- 明日は雨が降るはずだ。/ 降るそうだ。
- Why
- わけだ needs a reason already known. For a plain prediction use はずだ or hearsay forms.
- ✗
- 彼は日本人のわけだ。
- ✓
- 彼は日本人だというわけだ。/ 日本人なわけだ。
- Why
- Nouns take という or な before わけだ; の + わけだ sounds unnatural.
〜わけだ presents a conclusion as naturally following from facts; 〜はずだ is the speaker's expectation. Often paired with だから / それで / 〜から. A sentence with わけだ almost always refers back to something just said or noticed; it rarely opens a conversation.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- Look for なるほど, どうりで, つまり, or a first sentence that states a fact. If the blank sums up its consequence, choose わけだ.
- Do not pick わけだ when the sentence is a guess about the future; that is はずだ.
- In 並べ替え, 〜という + わけだ is often split into two chunks; join them first.
