Lesson 4 of 133

〜わけではない

wake dewa nai

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N2, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

It's not that… / it doesn't mean that…

〜わけではない denies only part of what the listener might be thinking. "It's not that I dislike it" leaves room for "I just don't eat it much". It is a soft correction, not a strong denial. With 全部 / 全員 / 必ずしも it means "not all" or "not necessarily".

Everywhere: conversation (〜わけじゃない), polite speech (〜わけではありません), essays. Very often followed by the real reason: ただ〜だけだ. 〜というわけではない denies a conclusion someone has drawn.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb (plain form) + わけではない
  • い-adjective + わけではない
  • な-adjective + な + わけではない
  • Noun + の / という + わけではない
  • Casual: 〜わけじゃない / Polite: 〜わけではありません

Visual diagram

  1. Step 1嫌いだI dislike it (plain statement)
  2. Step 2嫌いではないI do not dislike it (full denial)
  3. Step 3嫌いなわけではないit's not that I dislike it (partial denial: there is another reason)

Natural examples

  1. 嫌いなわけではないが、あまり食べない。

    きらいなわけではないが、あまりたべない。

It's not that I dislike it, but I don't eat it much.

Partial denial followed by the real situation after が.

  2. 高ければいいというわけではない。

    たかければいいというわけではない。

It doesn't mean that expensive things are automatically good.

〜というわけではない denies a general rule the listener might believe.

  3. 全部わかったわけじゃない。

    ぜんぶわかったわけじゃない。

It's not that I understood everything.

全部 + わけじゃない = "not all". Casual じゃない is normal in speech.

  4. 彼女を疑っているわけではありません。ただ、事実を確認したいだけです。

    かのじょをうたがっているわけではありません。ただ、じじつをかくにんしたいだけです。

It's not that I suspect her. I just want to confirm the facts.

Polite form + ただ〜だけです: the full, natural pattern.

  5. 日本人だからといって、誰でも敬語が得意なわけではない。

    にほんじんだからといって、だれでもけいごがとくいなわけではない。

Just because someone is Japanese doesn't mean everyone is good at keigo.

からといって + わけではない is a standard pair.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    嫌いわけではない。
    ✓
    嫌いなわけではない。
    Why
嫌い is a な-adjective; keep な before わけ.
  • ✗
    全員が来なかったわけではない。(intended: nobody came)
    ✓
    全員が来たわけではない。(not everyone came) / 誰も来なかった。(nobody came)
    Why
全員〜わけではない always means "not all"; it cannot mean "none".
  • ✗
    そんなことがあるわけではない!(angry denial)
    ✓
    そんなことがあるわけがない!
    Why
For a flat, angry denial use わけがない. わけではない sounds mild and unfinished.

Softer than a plain negation; denies the inference rather than the fact. 全部〜わけではない = "not all". Contrast 〜わけがない (strong "no way"). A sentence with わけではない usually continues; listeners wait for the "but…" part.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Look for contrast clues: ただ, 別に, 特に, 〜が / けど. If the second half gives a different reason, わけではない is the answer.
  • Distractors: わけがない, わけにはいかない, はずがない. Ask: soft correction (わけではない) or flat denial (わけがない)?
  • The chunk という + わけではない is often split in 並べ替え; join it first.
