〜わけがない

wake ga nai

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N2, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

There's no way that… / it's impossible that…

〜わけがない is a strong "no way!". The speaker has a reason and rejects the idea completely: あんなに練習したのに負けるわけがない = after practicing that much, there is no way he'll lose. It is emotional and confident, not a polite hedge.

Mostly conversation and informal writing. Used to reject a possibility (できるわけがない), defend someone (彼が嘘をつくわけがない), or express frustration. Casual: 〜わけない.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb (plain form) + わけがない
  • い-adjective + わけがない
  • な-adjective + な + わけがない
  • Noun + の / である + わけがない
  • Casual: 〜わけない / Polite: 〜わけがありません

  2. 〜とは限らない

  4. 〜わけがない

Natural examples

  1. あんなに練習したのに、負けるわけがない。

    あんなにれんしゅうしたのに、まけるわけがない。

After practicing that much, there's no way he'll lose.

The reason (あんなに練習した) makes losing unthinkable.

  2. こんな難しい問題、子供にできるわけがない。

    こんなむずかしいもんだい、こどもにできるわけがない。

There is no way a child can solve such a difficult problem.

こんな + 難しい問題 sets up the extreme case; わけがない rejects it.

  3. 彼が嘘をつくわけがない。

    かれがうそをつくわけがない。

    He would never lie.

Defending someone's character: he would never lie.

  4. こんな量の宿題、一晩で終わるわけがないよ。

    こんなりょうのしゅくだい、ひとばんでおわるわけがないよ。

There's no way this much homework can be finished in one night.

Frustrated tone; よ makes it a complaint to the listener.

  5. あの店がこんなに安いわけがない。何かの間違いだろう。

    あのみせがこんなにやすいわけがない。なにかのまちがいだろう。

There's no way that shop is this cheap. It must be some mistake.

い-adjective + わけがない, followed by the speaker's alternative explanation.

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜はずがない

Almost the same, but based on cool reasoning. わけがない is more emotional and colloquial.

  • 〜わけではない

Soft, partial denial. Mixing these two up changes the meaning completely. Compare side by side

  • 〜っこない (casual)

Casual "can't possibly": 終わりっこない. Only with verbs.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    彼が嘘をつくわけではない!
    ✓
    彼が嘘をつくわけがない!
    Why
For "he would never lie!" you need the strong わけがない. わけではない only says "it's not that he lies".
  • ✗
    できるわけがないです。(too blunt to a superior)
    ✓
    難しいと思います。/ できないと思います。
    Why
わけがない is emotional; in polite business situations soften it.
  • ✗
    上手わけがない。
    ✓
    上手なわけがない。
    Why
    な-adjective + な before わけ.

Nearly identical to 〜はずがない; わけがない feels slightly more emotional/colloquial. Do not confuse with 〜わけではない (partial denial). わけがない sounds decisive; add a reason (あんなに, こんな, 〜のに) to make it natural.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Clues: あんなに〜のに, こんな, 絶対, 嘘だ. If the speaker rejects an idea completely, choose わけがない.
  • Pair with 〜わけではない questions: a following ただ〜だけだ means わけではない; an exclamation mark or よ often means わけがない.
  • In listening-style dialogue questions, わけない (dropped が) is the same pattern.
