Both clauses must express change; not used for intentional actions in the main clause (x 〜につれて勉強しよう). Compare 〜ば〜ほど (proportional) and 〜とともに. Verbs of change that commonly precede につれて: 進む, 増える, 近づく, 上がる, たつ, 成長する.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- Both clauses gradual changes (〜なる, 〜てくる, 〜ていく) = につれて / にしたがって / とともに.
- If the main clause is a wish, command, or intention, につれて is wrong; look for another answer.
- A noun before the blank must itself express change (増加, 発展, 成長); a person or object noun rules out につれて.
