On the exam
- An ongoing activity in ている form + a sudden interruption (電話が鳴る, 地震, 停電) = 最中に.
- Verb must be 〜ている; a dictionary-form option before 最中 is wrong.
- Distractors: 途中で, うちに, ところに. If the second event breaks into an activity, choose 最中に.
