Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜がてら (N1)

Literary "while doing X (for pleasure)".

While a state lasts; no idea of an add-on task. Compare side by side

  • 〜ながら

Two actions at the same moment. ついでに is about sequence and convenience.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    郵便局に寄るついでに、買い物に行った。(main errand reversed)
    ✓
    買い物に行くついでに、郵便局に寄った。
    Why
The bigger, planned action comes before ついでに; the small add-on comes after.
  • ✗
    買い物ついでに
    ✓
    買い物のついでに
    Why
Nouns need の (though 買い物ついでに is heard in casual speech, use の in tests).
  • ✗
    結婚するついでに、家を買った。
    ✓
    結婚を機に、家を買った。
    Why
ついでに trivializes the second action; buying a house is not a casual add-on.

The main action comes first; the ついでに action is secondary/incidental. Can start a sentence: ついでに、これも頼む. ついでに can sound dismissive if the second action is important to the listener; use it for small favors.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Two actions where the second is a small extra (寄る, 買ってくる, 出す) = ついでに.
  • Distractors: うちに, ながら, たびに. Check for an errand-and-add-on structure.
  • Sentence-initial ついでに in dialogue questions signals an extra request.
