〜にしたら / 〜にすれば / 〜にしてみれば

ni shitara / ni sureba / ni shite mireba

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

from the standpoint of (a person); if you were…

〜にしたら / 〜にすれば / 〜にしてみれば all mean "from X's point of view", where X is a person or organization. The speaker imagines standing in X's shoes and reports how things look or feel to them. It usually carries sympathy: "For a parent, that must be the biggest worry."

Both speech and writing when discussing other people's feelings. にしてみれば has the strongest "try imagining" feel and is very common in conversation; にすれば is slightly stiffer. Not used for the speaker's own standpoint (私にしたら is unusual; use 私としては).

  • Noun + にすれば
  • Noun + にしてみれば / にしてみたら

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    この問題にしたら、難しい。
    ✓
    この問題は、彼にしたら難しい。
    Why
Only people or organizations can be a standpoint; a thing cannot "see" anything.
  • ✗
    私にしてみれば、この計画に賛成です。
    ✓
    私としては、この計画に賛成です。
    Why
For your own stated position use としては. にしてみれば is for imagining someone else's view.
  • ✗
    親にしたら、子供は学校に行く。
    ✓
    親にしたら、子供の安全が一番の心配だ。
    Why
The main clause must express a feeling or judgment, not a plain fact.

Often followed by だろう / かもしれない / はずだ because the speaker is guessing at another person's feelings. にしてみれば can be strengthened: 彼にしてみれば、たまったものではない. Formal equivalents in writing: 〜の立場からすれば / 〜の立場に立てば.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • If the noun is a person and the main clause is a feeling (心配, 迷惑, つらい), choose にしたら / にしてみれば over にとって.
  • Distractors almost always include にしては (unexpected result) and にしても (even if). Check the particle after にし.
  • In 並べ替え, にしてみれば sits right after the person and is followed by the feeling.
