ni totte

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N3, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

for… / from the standpoint of… (followed by an evaluation)

〜にとって means "for (X)" in the sense "from X's point of view". It tells whose standpoint an evaluation is made from: 私にとって日本語は難しい – for me, Japanese is hard (someone else might find it easy). The sentence that follows is almost always a judgment: important, difficult, necessary, a problem, happiness.

Very common in speech and writing at every level. Typical uses: saying how important or hard something is for a person or group (子どもにとって, 会社にとって, 日本にとって), and set phrases such as 私にとって一番大切なものは….

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Noun (person, group, organization) + にとって
  • Noun + にとっては (with contrast focus) / にとっても (also for…)
  • Noun + にとっての + Noun (私にとっての幸せ = happiness as I see it)
  • Followed by an evaluation: 大切だ, 難しい, 必要だ, 問題だ, 幸せだ, 意味がある

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    先生にとって質問した。
    ✓
    先生に質問した。
    Why
Asking is an action toward a person, not an evaluation. にとって cannot mark the recipient of an action.
  • ✗
    私にとって、日本語を勉強したい。
    ✓
    私は日本語を勉強したい。
    Why
What follows にとって must be a judgment (難しい, 大切だ), not a wish, intention, or action.
  • ✗
    この本にとって、私は感動した。
    ✓
    この本に、私は感動した。/この本は私にとって感動的だった。
    Why
にとって marks the viewpoint, usually a person or organization, not the thing being evaluated.

The noun before にとって is usually a person or group, but abstract nouns like 人類, 社会, 経済 are also common. にとっては highlights a contrast with other viewpoints; にとっても adds a viewpoint. Do not follow にとって with 賛成する, 反対する, 話す – those need に対して or について.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式の判断, if the predicate is an adjective of evaluation (大切, 必要, 難しい, 幸せ), the blank is にとって. If it is an action verb, it is not.
  • Standard distractors: に対して, として, について. Ask: viewpoint (にとって), target (に対して), role (として), topic (について).
  • The noun-modifying form にとっての appears before nouns like 幸せ, 意味, 問題.
