Meaning

For… / from the standpoint of…

〜にとって means "for X" in the sense of "from X's point of view": 私にとって、家族が一番大切です = for me, family is the most important thing. What follows is a judgement or evaluation (大切, 難しい, 必要, 幸せ), not an action.

Opinions, essays, speeches. Before a noun use にとっての. Common with people, groups, and sometimes things (会社にとって, 日本にとって).

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Noun + にとって (は / も)
  • Noun + にとっての + Noun
  • Followed by an evaluation: 大切だ / 難しい / 必要だ / 意味がある

    For this town, tourism is the most important industry.

    A place or organization can hold the viewpoint.

  5. 子供にとっての遊びは、大人にとっての仕事と同じくらい大切だ。

    こどもにとってのあそびは、おとなにとってのしごとおなじくらいたいせつだ。

    Play for children is as important as work for adults.

Followed by adjectives of evaluation (大切、難しい、必要), not by actions or opinions like 賛成/反対 (use 〜としては or 〜は). Compare 〜に対して (target). にとっても ("even for") and にとっては ("as for me at least") are common.

On the exam

  • If an evaluation adjective (大切, 必要, 難しい, 幸せ, 大きな問題) follows, choose にとって.
  • If 賛成 / 反対 / 〜と思う follows, choose としては instead; this is a designed trap.
  • Before a noun the form is にとっての.
