〜に対して / 〜に対する

Meaning

Toward… / to… / in contrast to…

〜に対して points an action or attitude at a target: 学生に対して優しい = kind toward the students. It also contrasts two things: 兄が静かなのに対して、弟はにぎやかだ = whereas my brother is quiet, my younger brother is lively. In both cases, the noun before に対して is what the rest of the sentence is aimed at or compared with.

Formal speech and writing: attitudes (態度, 意見, 批判), reactions (反対する, 抗議する), and contrasts in essays. Before a noun use に対する / に対しての.

  • If the following word is an attitude or reaction (態度, 親切, 反対, 批判), choose に対して. If it is 話す / 調べる / 考える, choose について.
  • For the contrast use, look for two subjects with opposite descriptions and 〜のに対して after a clause.
  • Before a noun the form is に対する; options with に対して directly before a noun are wrong.
