Common mistakes

  • ✗
    Why
After naming a source you must end with hearsay, not your own opinion (と思う).
  • ✗
    Why
によって means "by / depending on". The source of information takes
    Why
Without a hearsay ending the sentence sounds unfinished; add

Do not end with 〜と思う; the sentence must be hearsay. によると can also mean "depending on" in rare cases (人によると), but in JLPT it is almost always the source meaning.

JLPT N3 tips

On the exam

  • Check the end of the sentence: そうだ / らしい / ということだ after the blank means the blank is によると.
  • The classic trap is によって. Source of information = によると; cause, means, or agent = によって.
  • In 並べ替え, place 〜によると at the start and the hearsay ending at the end; the middle chunks are the information.
