Common mistakes
- ✗
- 彼は日本人にしては、日本語が上手だ。
- ✓
- 彼は外国人にしては、日本語が上手だ。
- Why
- The noun must set an expectation that is broken; a Japanese person speaking Japanese well is expected.
- ✗
- 高いにしては
- ✓
- 高いわりに / 値段にしては
- Why
- にしては takes nouns or verb clauses, not bare い-adjectives; use わりに.
- ✗
- 医者にしては、たばこは勧めない。(intended: as a doctor)
- ✓
- 医者として、たばこは勧めない。
- Why
- A role from which one speaks uses として.
Contrasts with 〜として (as expected of). Compare 〜わりに(は): similar, but わりに can take adjectives (高いわりに) while にしては takes nouns/facts. Common with quantities and times: 十二月にしては, 三年目にしては, 初心者にしては.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- A label noun + blank + a fact that surprises = にしては.
- として is the main trap: ask whether the main clause contradicts the expectation.
- い-adjective before the blank means わりに, not にしては.
