- 急いでとしても
- ✓
- 急いだとしても / 急ぐとしても
- Why
- としても attaches to plain forms, not the て-form.
- ✗
- 冗談としても、ひどすぎる。(intended: even if it was a joke)
- ✓
- 冗談だとしても、ひどすぎる。
- Why
- A noun needs だ before としても for the "even if" meaning; without だ it reads as "as a joke".
- ✗
- 彼が来たとしても、遅くなった。(real past)
- ✓
- 彼が来たとしても、遅くなるはずだ。
- Why
- としても is hypothetical, so the main clause is a prediction, not a completed fact.
More hypothetical than 〜ても; often paired with たとえ. N + としても can also mean "as ~ too" (親としても嬉しい). The main clause is often a judgement: だろう / はずだ / 無理だ / 意味がない.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- A plain clause + blank + a prediction (だろう, はずだ) = としても.
- A て-form before the blank means ても, not としても; check the form.
- Noun + としても with a positive statement (嬉しい, 誇りだ) is the role meaning, not a concession.
