〜より(ほか)ない / 〜よりほかはない

have no choice but to …; there is nothing for it but to …

Vる + よりほかない says that only one option is left: "nothing to do but X". より means "other than", ほか means "else", ない makes it "there is nothing else". It is the slightly formal cousin of 〜しかない and appears in both writing and careful speech.

Written and formal spoken Japanese: reports, explanations of decisions, resigned statements. Variants: よりほかない, よりほかはない, より(ほか)しかたがない, よりほかに〜ない. In casual speech people say しかない.

   よりない is the shortest variant, common in resigned speech.

   There is no way to survive other than having surgery.

   よりほかに + 道はない: "no way other than" with an explicit noun.

   Now that the evidence is all in, there is nothing to do but admit the crime.

   以上 + よりほかはない is a formal pairing.

   ていでんがつづくなら、こんやはろうそくですごすよりしかたがない。

   If the power cut continues, we will just have to spend tonight by candlelight.

   よりしかたがない sounds resigned.

  The verb before より stays in the dictionary form; tense goes on ない.

よりほかはない (with は) sounds a little more emphatic and written than よりほかない. The pattern often follows a clause that closes off other options: 〜以上・〜からには・こうなったら. In apologies and explanations, 〜よりほかありません politely states that nothing else could be done.
