〜を通して / 〜を通じて

through (a person, medium); by means of; throughout (a period)

〜を通して and 〜を通じて have two jobs. (1) Means: "through X" — an intermediary person, an experience, or a medium (友人を通して・読書を通して・テレビを通じて). (2) Span: "throughout X" — the whole of a period (一年を通じて・生涯を通して). を通じて sounds a touch more formal; を通して slightly stresses the act of going through.

Both spoken and written; を通じて is favoured in news and formal writing, を通して in speech and essays. A review point from N2; N1 tests the contrast with を経て, によって, にわたって.

   生涯を通して = throughout her life.

• 〜を経て

  "After passing through (stages)" to reach a result. を通して is a means or a span, not stages toward a result. Compare side by side

• 〜にわたって

  "Over a span of" stressing length or range (十年にわたって). を通じて stresses the whole of a fixed period (一年を通じて). Compare side by side

• 〜によって

  "By" (means, cause, agent). を通して is specifically an intermediary or channel. Compare side by side

  Why

  A stage passed before a result takes を経て. を通じて would only mean "by means of training".

  For a long duration emphasizing its length, にわたって is natural. を通じて fits a fixed whole period like 一年・生涯.

Business Japanese prefers を通じて: 代理店を通じて・弊社を通じて. For experiences and activities as a source of learning, を通して is very common in essays: ボランティア活動を通して学んだ. The verb forms 通す (to pass something through) and 通じる (to connect) explain the slight nuance difference.
