ta form

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Plain/casual past "did".

The た-form is the plain past: 食べた "ate", 行った "went". It means the same as ました but is casual. The good news: you already know how to make it. Take the て-form and change て to た (and で to だ): 書いて→書いた, 読んで→読んだ. Plain past negative is なかった (食べなかった).

Casual talk about the past, diaries, and patterns that need it: たり〜たりする, たほうがいい, たことがある, and describing a noun (昨日買った本 "the book I bought yesterday").

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Same as て-form, replacing て→た, で→だ. 買う→買った, 読む→読んだ, 書く→書いた, 泳ぐ→泳いだ, 話す→話した, 行く→行った, 食べる→食べた, する→した, 来る→来た (きた).
