ました ／ ませんでした (polite past)

Polite past affirmative / negative.

ました means "did" and ませんでした means "did not". They are the past forms of ます and ません, made on the same stem: 見ます → 見ました → 見ませんでした. Notice that the past negative is just ません + でした; you do not change ました.

Talking about anything finished: what you did yesterday, last week, this morning. Combined with time words like 昨日, 先週, 去年, さっき.

   昨日映画を見ました。

   きのう えいがを みました。

   I watched a film yesterday.

   Past action with 昨日: ました.

2. 02

   先週京都へ行きました。

   せんしゅう きょうとへ いきました。

   I went to Kyoto last week.

   Past with 先週: 行きました.

3. 03

   朝ご飯を食べませんでした。

   あさごはんを たべませんでした。

   I didn't eat breakfast.

   Past negative: ません + でした.

4. 04

   今朝、新聞を読みました。

   けさ、しんぶんを よみました。

   I read the newspaper this morning.

   今朝 (this morning) is already past.

5. 05

   昨日は誰にも会いませんでした。

   きのうは だれにも あいませんでした。

   I didn't meet anyone yesterday.

   誰にも + past negative.

  でした is only for nouns/adjectives. Verbs use the ます-stem + ました.

ませんでした = ません + でした; never say ましたません. For adjectives and nouns the past forms are different (see points 4, 27, 28).
