て-form

te form

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

The connecting form — used for requests (てください), continuing actions (ている), permission, prohibition, joining clauses, and sequence.

The て-form is the "connector" shape of a verb: 食べて, 書いて, 行って. It has no tense of its own; it joins the verb to what comes next. With ください it makes a request (書いてください), with います an ongoing action (食べています), and by itself it links actions in a sequence (起きて、食べて、行きます "get up, eat and go"). Group 2 verbs simply swap る for て. Group 1 verbs change according to their last sound, so learn the small table.

Requests, ongoing actions, permission, prohibition, and joining two or more actions in order. Almost half of N5 grammar patterns are built on the て-form.

On the exam

  • The exam loves the exceptions: 行って, 帰って, 入って, 話して (not 話って), 泳いで (not 泳いて).
  • Check the last kana of the dictionary form and apply the table. If the verb is -いる/-える, decide whether it is really Group 2 before dropping る.
