Meaning
(1) an action in progress "is ~ing"; (2) a resulting state "is ~ed"; (3) a habitual action or occupation.
ています has three meanings, and the verb decides which. (1) An action happening right now: 食べています "is eating". (2) A state that resulted from an action and is still true: 東京に住んでいます "lives in Tokyo", 結婚しています "is married". (3) A habit or job: 銀行で働いています "works at a bank". Negative: ていません; casual: ている.
Answering "What are you doing now?", saying where you live and work, describing what people in a picture are doing, and the state verbs 知っています (know), 持っています (have).

知る is always 知っています for "know". The negative is 知りません.
子供たちは公園で遊んでいます。
