もう / まだ

Meaning

もう = "already" (with affirmative) / "not any more" (with negative); まだ = "still" (affirmative) / "not yet" (with ていません).

もう means "already" and まだ means "still / not yet". もう食べました "I already ate"; まだ食べていません "I haven't eaten yet". The important pairing: "not yet" is まだ + ていません, not まだ + ませんでした. With a negative, もう means "not any more" (もうありません "there's none left"), and with an affirmative まだ means "still" (まだ降っています "still raining").

Asking and answering whether something is done (もう〜ましたか / まだです), describing something continuing (まだ), and saying something has run out or changed (もう〜ません).
