ほうがいい

hou ga ii

By Nihongo PathUpdated

This form is also taught at JLPT N4, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

"it would be better to ~ / you had better ~" (advice).

ほうがいい gives advice: "you had better / it would be better to". Positive advice uses the た-form: 早く寝たほうがいいです "You'd better go to bed early". Negative advice uses the ない-form: そんなに食べないほうがいいです "You'd better not eat that much". Even though the た-form looks like past tense, the advice is about now or the future.

Health advice, suggestions to friends (take an umbrella, study more), and gentle warnings. Softened with と思います.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-た + ほうがいいです / V-ない + ほうがいいです
