Meaning

"~ is more ~" — highlights the item that is greater in a comparison, especially in answers to "which".

ほう means "side", and のほうが points at the side that wins the comparison: 冬のほうが好きです "I like winter more". It is the natural answer to "which of the two?" (どちらが〜ですか). Often combined with より: 夏より冬のほうが好きです "I like winter more than summer". After a verb, use the plain form + ほうが: 歩くほうが健康にいいです.
