Meaning
"than ~" — marks the standard of comparison.
より means "than" and marks the thing you compare against: 東京は大阪より大きいです "Tokyo is bigger than Osaka". The adjective itself does not change; there is no "-er" in Japanese. Structure: A は B より + adjective. B is the standard, A is the one that has more of the quality.
Comparing two things: cities, weather, prices, speeds, people. Also in the answer to どちらが〜ですか along with ほうが.
