This form is also taught at JLPT N3, where it carries a different sense or register.

Meaning

not only ... but also

〜だけでなく means "not only… but also…". The first item is the expected one, and the second clause adds something more, usually marked with も: he speaks not only English but Chinese too; this shop is not only cheap, the service is good too.

Both registers; the neutral, everyday choice. It follows plain forms and nouns directly (な-adjectives take な or である). More formal equivalents: 〜のみならず, 〜ばかりでなく; for widening from a typical case, 〜に限らず.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • 普通形 + だけでなく / N + だけでなく (+ 〜も)

JLPT N2 tips

  • Distractors: に限らず (nouns only), 上に (same polarity), ばかりか. After an adjective or verb, に限らず is impossible.
  • Form questions test 便利なだけでなく; missing な is the trap.
