- Why
- な-adjectives take な before だけでなく.
- ✗

- ✓
- 子供だけでなく、大人も楽しめる映画だ。
- Why
- は after the added item breaks the 'not only… but also' link; use も.
The second half can use まで or さえ for extra surprise: 子供だけでなく、大人まで夢中になった. だけでなく can be followed by a clause, not only a noun: 安いだけでなく、味もいい. In formal writing 〜のみならず (N2) is the stiff equivalent.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- Spot the も in the second half; it almost always signals だけでなく / ばかりでなく / はもちろん in the blank.
- If the sentence says X is obvious (もちろん), choose はもちろん; otherwise だけでなく is the safe answer.
- In 並べ替え, put だけでなく right after the first item and も right after the second.
