Meaning
on the other hand / while… (the opposite side of the same thing)
〜反面 literally means "the opposite face". You describe one side of something, then flip it over to show the other side: "This job pays well, but (the flip side is) there are few days off." Both sides belong to the same thing, and one is usually good while the other is bad.
Used mainly in writing and careful speech when weighing pros and cons: a job, a city, a person's character, a technology. It is not used for two unrelated facts or for two different people.

Common mistakes
- ✗
- 兄は社交的な反面、弟は内気だ。
- ✓
- 兄は社交的な一方で、弟は内気だ。
- Why
- 反面 needs the same subject on both sides. Two different brothers require 一方で.
- ✗
- この店は安い反面、おいしい。
- ✓
- この店は安い反面、量が少ない。
- Why
- 反面 introduces the opposite side (a drawback after a merit, or vice versa). Two merits do not form a 'flip side'.
- ✗
- 都会は便利反面、生活費が高い。
- ✓
- 都会は便利な反面、生活費が高い。
- Why
- な-adjectives need な (or である) before 反面.
Order can go either way: merit → drawback or drawback → merit (厳しい反面、優しい). The second clause often ends with 〜もある / 〜ところもある to soften it. 反面 is slightly formal; in conversation people often just say けど.
JLPT N3 tips
On the exam
- Check the subject: if both halves describe the same thing with a good/bad flip, 反面 is right; if the subjects differ, choose 一方で.
- 反面 rarely follows a bare noun; look for である or な before the blank.
- Distractors are typically 一方で, かわりに and ついでに. Ask: is this a flip side (反面), a trade (かわりに), or a side action (ついでに)?
