〜ものなら

mono nara / -you mono nara

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

if one could (unlikely wish); if one dares to (dire consequence)

〜ものなら has two uses. After a potential verb it expresses a wish that seems hard to realize: 帰れるものなら今すぐ帰りたい (if only I could go home). After the volitional (〜ようものなら) it warns of a serious consequence: 遅刻しようものなら、ひどく叱られる (if you so much as arrive late…). Both share the sense of an unlikely or risky condition.

Both speech and writing. The wish use is common with 〜たい / 〜てほしい; the warning use is common with 叱られる / 大変だ / ただでは済まない. Slightly dramatic in tone.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb potential + ものなら + 〜たい / 〜てほしい (wish)
  • Verb volitional (〜よう) + ものなら + dire consequence (warning)
  • Set phrases: できるものなら / やれるものならやってみろ (a challenge)
  • Casual: 〜もんなら

    Why
The wish use requires the potential form.
  • ✗
    遅刻するものなら、叱られる。
    ✓
    遅刻しようものなら、叱られる。
    Why
The warning use requires the volitional form.
  • ✗
    できるものなら、できる。
    ✓
    できるものなら、やってみたい。
    Why
The main clause must be a wish or a dire result, not a plain statement.

The wish use implies the speaker knows it is unrealistic. The warning use exaggerates the consequence for effect. やれるものならやってみろ is a common taunt in drama.
