〜ものの

monono

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

although… / …but (the expected result didn't follow)

〜ものの means "although (X is true), (Y)". The first part is admitted as a fact; the second part says that things did not go as you would expect from that fact. For example, "I bought the book, but I haven't read it" – buying normally leads to reading, and ものの flags that gap.

Written and formal spoken Japanese (reports, essays, presentations). In casual speech けど / が are used instead. Typical situations: admitting you did something but not the follow-up, or admitting a good point while raising a problem (値段は安いものの、品質が悪い).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Verb (plain form) + ものの
  • い-adjective + ものの
  • な-adjective + な / である + ものの
  • Noun + である + ものの
  • Set phrase: とはいうものの (that being said…)

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    彼は真面目ものの、成績が悪い。
    ✓
    彼は真面目なものの、成績が悪い。
    Why
真面目 is a な-adjective; it needs な (or である) before ものの, as before a noun.
  • ✗
    雨が降ったものの、行きましょう。
    ✓
    雨が降っていますが、行きましょう。
    Why
The clause after ものの must be a statement of fact, not an invitation, command, or request.
  • ✗
    値段は安いものの、買った。
    ✓
    値段は安いので、買った。/値段は安いものの、買わなかった。
    Why
ものの needs a result that goes against expectation. Cheap → bought is the expected result, so ものの is wrong.

The second clause often contains なかなか〜ない, まだ〜ていない, or それほど〜ない, expressing an unfulfilled expectation. ものの is somewhat formal; in speech you will hear 〜けど, 〜のに far more often. とはいうものの starts a new sentence and means "that said"; it is a common expression in essays.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式の判断, ものの is the answer when clause 1 is a completed fact and clause 2 says the natural consequence hasn't happened (まだ / なかなか / 一度も).
  • Distractors: ものだ, ものなら, ものだから, ものか. Read the following clause: if it is a contrasting fact, choose ものの.
  • The verb before ものの is usually past or plain; the sentence never ends with a request or volitional form.
