Lesson 46 of 156

〜だけ(に) / 〜だけあって

dake ni / dake atte

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

precisely because, as expected of

〜だけあって means "as you'd expect from…, precisely because…" and praises a result that fits the cause: as a former pro, he teaches well. 〜だけに means "precisely because…" and can go either way: because I had high hopes, the disappointment was great.

Both registers. だけあって is almost always positive and evaluative (befitting a reputation, price, or effort). だけに strengthens cause and effect and is often used when the result is stronger than usual, including bad results. だけのことはある is the sentence-final form ("it lives up to it").

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V普通形 + だけに / だけあって; Aい / Aな + な / N + (である) + だけに / だけあって
