〜とて

tote

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

even …; even if …; just because …

とて is an old-fashioned particle with three uses. (1) N + とて = "even N (is no exception)": 私とて (even I). (2) Vた + とて = 〜ても: 後悔したとて (even if you regret it). (3) 〜からとて = 〜からといって: 親だからとて (just because one is a parent). All three sound literary.

Formal written Japanese, speeches, literature. Use 1 often carries a defensive tone ("I, too, have feelings"). Uses 2 and 3 are usually followed by a negative conclusion (どうにもならない, 権利はない).

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • N + とて (私とて・今とて・専門家とて)
  • Vた + とて + negative (= ても)
  • 普通形 + からとて + negative (= からといって)

    私とて、悲しい。
    Why
とて is complete on its own; とても is a different word ("very").

    Why
からとて is followed by a negative or a denial of the expected conclusion.

N + とて is common with pronouns and roles: 私とて・彼とて・親とて・子供とて. Sentences with とて almost always end in a negative or a statement that nothing can be done. It gives prose a slightly archaic flavour; in speech it appears in formal or dramatic contexts.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • A pronoun or role + blank + "is no exception" → とて. A past verb + blank + どうにもならない → とて (= ても).
  • Distractors: として, とても, とはいえ. Do not confuse とて with として ("as").
  • からとて appears as a single option; equate it with からといって.
