〜ともあろう

tomo arou

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

someone of the standing of …; a … of all people (should not have)

〜ともあろう + 人/者/会社 + が means "a person of X's high standing". It is used when someone who should know better does something unworthy: a minister making an irresponsible remark, a police officer breaking the law. The speaker is shocked or indignant: "of all people, a …!"

Formal spoken and written Japanese: editorials, criticism, complaints, and disappointed comments. X is always a respected position or organization (大臣・医者・教師・警察官・一流企業・大学). The clause after が describes the unworthy act, often ending in とは / なんて / べきではない.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • N + ともあろう + 人 / 者 / 方 / もの + が
  • N + ともあろう + organization noun (会社・大学・新聞) + が
  • Ending: 〜とは / 〜なんて / 〜とは情けない / 〜べきではない

Visual diagram

  2. ともあろう人が"a person of that standing"
  3. そんな無責任な発言をするunworthy act
  4. とはshock / indignation
To think that a minister, of all people, would make such an irresponsible remark.

Natural examples

  1. 大臣ともあろう人が、そんな無責任な発言をするとは。

    だいじんともあろうひとが、そんなむせきにんなはつげんをするとは。

To think that a minister, of all people, would make such an irresponsible remark.

Sentence-final とは leaves the indignation hanging: "…of all people!"

  2. 警察官ともあろう者が、法を犯すなんて信じられない。

    けいさつかんともあろうものが、ほうをおかすなんてしんじられない。

I cannot believe a police officer, of all people, would break the law.

警察官 (police officer) breaking the law is a textbook mismatch of standing and act.

  3. 一流企業ともあろう会社が、こんなミスをするとは驚きだ。

    いちりゅうきぎょうともあろうかいしゃが、こんなミスをするとはおどろきだ。

It is astonishing that a top-class company would make such a mistake.

The noun can be an organization: 一流企業ともあろう会社.

  4. 医者ともあろう者が、患者の話をろくに聞かないとは情けない。

    いしゃともあろうものが、かんじゃのはなしをろくにきかないとはなさけない。

It is pathetic that a doctor, of all people, would barely listen to his patients.

とは情けない is a common ending for disappointment.

A teacher, of all people, must not lie in front of the students.

Can also end in a prohibition (てはいけない・べきではない).

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜たる(もの)

"One who is X" stating what someone in that position should do (教師たる者、常に学ぶべきだ). ともあろう is used when they failed to live up to it. Compare side by side

  • 〜まじき

Describes the act as unbecoming (教師にあるまじき行為). ともあろう describes the person whose standing makes the act shocking; the two are often used together. Compare side by side

  • 〜にしては

"Considering that X is …", a mild surprise about a mismatch. ともあろう is strong indignation limited to high-status X. Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    学生ともあろう人が、そんなことをするとは。
    ✓
    教授ともあろう人が、そんなことをするとは。
    Why
X must be a position with high standing or responsibility. An ordinary student does not carry that expectation.
  • ✗
    大臣ともあろう人が、素晴らしい演説をした。
    ✓
    大臣ともあろう人が、あんな失言をした。
    Why
The act must be unworthy of the position. A good speech from a minister is expected, so the pattern makes no sense.
  • ✗
    警察官ともあろうは、法を守るべきだ。
    ✓
    警察官ともあろう者は、法を守るべきだ。
    Why
ともあろう modifies a noun (人・者・もの); it cannot take a particle directly.

The most common frame is Xともあろう者が + unworthy act + とは / なんて, often with a judgment word: 情けない・嘆かわしい・信じられない. ともあろう comes from とも + あろう ("even one who would be X"), so it always sounds elevated; do not use it in casual complaints about friends. It is frequently combined with まじき: 警察官ともあろう者が、警察官にあるまじき行為をした.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式の判断, a high-status noun + 人/者 + が + an unworthy act + とは is the signature of ともあろう.
  • Distractors are たる者 and にしては. たる者 states a duty; ともあろう expresses shock at a failure. にしては is mild and works with any noun.
  • In 並べ替え, ともあろう and 者が are often separate chunks; keep them together and put the unworthy act last.
