〜なくもない / 〜ないでもない

naku mo nai / nai demo nai

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

it is not that … not …; I can sort of …; there is a little …

〜なくもない and 〜ないでもない are double negatives that give a weak, hedged yes. "I don't NOT understand" = "I can sort of understand". The speaker admits something partly, reluctantly, or with conditions attached. It never sounds enthusiastic.

Spoken and written, common in conversation when giving a cautious opinion or a reluctant admission. Often preceded by そう言われれば, 考えようによっては, 〜ば. Typical verbs: わかる・言える・気がする・思う・感じる・できる.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Vない-stem + なくもない (わからなくもない)
  • Vない-stem + ないでもない (わからないでもない)
  • いA-く + なくもない (辛くなくもない)
  • なA / N + でなくもない (便利でなくもない)
  • Also: 〜ないこともない (see N2)

Visual diagram

How strong is the admission?
  1. わからない

flat no: I do not understand

  2. わからなくもない

hedged: I can sort of understand

  3. わかる

    plain yes: I understand

Natural examples

  1. 彼の言うことも、わからなくもない。

    かれのいうことも、わからなくもない。

I can sort of understand what he is saying.

も after わかること softens even further: "his point too, I can sort of see".

  2. そう言われれば、そんな気がしないでもない。

    そういわれれば、そんなきがしないでもない。

Now that you mention it, I do kind of feel that way.

そう言われれば ("now that you say it") is a classic lead-in for ないでもない.

  3. この料理は、少し辛いと言えなくもない。

    このりょうりは、すこしからいといえなくもない。

You could say this dish is a little spicy.

と言えなくもない = "you could just about say", a hedged evaluation.

  4. 条件次第では、その提案を受け入れなくもない。

    じょうけんしだいでは、そのていあんをうけいれなくもない。

Depending on the conditions, I might be willing to accept the proposal.

A reluctant, conditional yes in negotiation.

  5. 彼の気持ちもわからないでもないが、やはり許せない。

    かれのきもちもわからないでもないが、やはりゆるせない。

I can sort of see how he feels, but I still cannot forgive him.

Often followed by が / けど and the speaker's real position.

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    この店の料理は、おいしくなくもない!最高だ!
    ✓
    この店の料理は、最高においしい!
    Why
なくもない is a lukewarm, hedged admission. Pairing it with enthusiastic praise is contradictory.
  • ✗
    わかるなくもない。
    ✓
    わからなくもない。
    Why
Attach なくもない to the ない-stem (わから), not to the dictionary form.
  • ✗
    便利なくもない。
    ✓
    便利でなくもない。
    Why
な-adjectives and nouns need で before なくもない.

Because it sounds grudging, it can be a polite way to disagree softly: 悪くなくもないですが… ("it is not bad, but…"). ないでもない is slightly more colloquial than なくもない; both are fine in speech. Pairs naturally with hedging adverbs: 多少・少し・まあ・ある意味・考えようによっては.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • In 文法形式の判断, a lead-in like そう言われれば or 考えようによっては followed by a verb of perception or judgment (わかる・気がする・言える) calls for なくもない / ないでもない.
  • Check the attachment: ない-stem + なくもない. Options built on the dictionary form are wrong.
  • In 並べ替え, the chunk と言えなくもない is often split as と言え / なくもない.
