JLPT N1 tips
On the exam
- If a respected role noun is followed by a duty (べきだ / なければならない), the blank is たるもの.
- として is the neutral distractor: it fits grammatically but lacks the moral "as one who holds that position" sense the exam targets.
- ともあろう is the other distractor; it introduces criticism of a specific person's behaviour, not a general duty.
