    ✓
    雨が降ろうと、行く。
    Why
であれ attaches to nouns; verbs use the volitional + と / が.

    ✓
    誰であれ、来た人は歓迎する。
    Why
であれ is a concessive connector, not a subject marker.

Frequent phrases: 誰であれ, 何であれ, どうであれ, どんな理由であれ, たとえ〜であれ. であろうと is slightly softer and more spoken than であれ. The second clause is a firm rule or decision.

JLPT N1 tips

On the exam

  • A question word + であれ followed by a rule is the signature; conditional であれば is the trap.
  • For verbs, the exam wants 〜ようと / ようが, not であれ.
  • When two nouns are contrasted (大人であれ子供であれ), the paired form is needed.
