Meaning
X exists only thanks to Y; without Y there would be no X
N1あってのN2 says that N2 is possible only because N1 exists: "N2 that owes its existence to N1". The noun before あっての is the indispensable condition (customers, family, health), and the noun after it is what depends on it. It is a compact way of expressing gratitude or a reminder: "remember that without X there is no Y".
Speeches, thank-you messages, business slogans and moral reminders. Slightly formal, but heard in speech too (お客様あっての商売, ファンあっての私). The dependent noun is often a person or activity that the speaker is being modest about.

N1 + あっての + N2 (N2 depends on N1)N1 + あっての + こと ("only because of N1")The clause usually ends with だ / です or continues with a reminder such as 〜を忘れてはいけない

JLPT N1 tips
On the exam
- Look for two nouns with あっての between them and a message of gratitude or dependence; the answer is あっての, not なくして (which needs a negative clause).
- Distractors are often にあって ("in a situation") and をもって; both attach to nouns but have nothing to do with gratitude.
- In 並べ替え the chunk あっての sits between the two nouns; place the precondition first.
