〜おかげで

okage de

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

thanks to (positive cause)

〜おかげで means "thanks to…". It names the cause of a good result and expresses gratitude: thanks to my teacher, I passed. When used with a bad result it becomes sarcastic ("thanks to you, I was late").

Both registers. おかげさまで is the fixed polite reply ("thanks to you / fortunately"). The opposite, 〜せいで, blames a cause for a bad result. おかげで attaches like a noun: N + の, な-adjective + な, verbs and い-adjectives in plain form.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V普通形 + おかげで / Aい + おかげで / Aな + な + おかげで / N + の + おかげで

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    先生おかげで、合格した。
    ✓
    先生のおかげで、合格した。
    Why
    Nouns need の before おかげ.
  • ✗
    薬を飲んだおかげで、気分が悪くなった。
    ✓
    薬を飲んだせいで、気分が悪くなった。
    Why
A bad result takes せいで unless you intend sarcasm.
  • ✗
    親切なおかげで、助かった。
    ✓
    皆さんが親切だったおかげで、助かった。
    Why
おかげで needs a clear cause; a bare adjective without a subject sounds incomplete.

Sentence-final form: 合格できたのは先生のおかげだ. おかげさまで is used even when the listener did nothing; it is simply polite. The clause after おかげで is usually past or a present state that has resulted.

JLPT N2 tips

On the exam

  • Read the result clause first: good result + gratitude → おかげで; bad result → せいで.
  • Distractors: せいで, ために, ばかりに. ばかりに always leads to a bad outcome.
  • Watch the attachment: N + の, Aな + な (an option missing な is a trap).
