Common mistakes

  • ✗
    先生のせいで、合格できました。
    ✓
    先生のおかげで、合格できました。
    Why
A good result needs おかげで. せいで with a good result sounds sarcastic or rude.
  • ✗
    寝坊のせいで遅刻した。(with a verb)
    ✓
    寝坊したせいで遅刻した。
    Why
Verbs attach in plain form; の is only for nouns (寝坊 as a noun is possible, but mixing 寝坊した + の is wrong).
  • ✗
    疲れたのはあなたのせいか。
    ✓
    疲れたのはあなたのせいだ。
    Why
せいか means "maybe because" inside a sentence; to blame directly use せいだ.

Always negative outcome and blame. Positive counterpart is 〜おかげで. 〜せいにする = "blame it on ~". せいか softens blame and is polite when you don't want to accuse anyone.
