Lesson 106 of 110

〜ように (wish / prayer) "may … / I hope …"

you ni (negai)

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Expressing a hope or prayer, usually sentence-final, at shrines, New Year, and in cards.

Ending a sentence with 〜ますように expresses a wish or prayer: 試験に合格しますように = "May I pass the exam". The verb 祈る (pray) or 願う (wish) is left unsaid. You see it on wooden plaques at shrines, in New Year wishes and in get-well cards. It is the third job of ように: the others are purpose (聞こえるように大きい声で話す, lesson 16) and "like / as" (先生が言ったように, lesson 37).

Prayers at shrines and temples, greeting cards (早く元気になりますように), messages of good luck, and quiet hopes (明日雨が降りませんように). Mostly written or said softly to oneself. The polite ます-form is usual; the plain form (合格するように) is casual.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • V-ます + ように: 合格しますように, 元気になりますように
  • V-ません + ように: 降りませんように
  • V-plain + ように (casual): 合格するように, 降らないように
  • Full sentence: 〜ように祈っています / 〜ようにお祈りします

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    試験に合格したいように。
    ✓
    試験に合格しますように。
    Why
The wish form uses the ます-form (or plain form) of the verb, not 〜たい.
  • ✗
    雨が降らないでように。
    ✓
    雨が降りませんように。/ 雨が降らないように。
    Why
The negative is ません or ない before ように, without で.
  • ✗
    合格しますように勉強しています。
    ✓
    合格するように勉強しています。
    Why
With an action following, this is the purpose ように, which uses the plain form. ますように is only for prayers.

The pattern is fixed and polite: even close friends write 〜ますように on cards. Common wishes: 幸せになれますように, 早くよくなりますように, 来年もいい年でありますように. The closing どうか adds earnestness: どうか無事に帰ってきますように.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • A sentence that ends with the blank after a ます-form and describes something hoped for (合格, 元気になる, 晴れる) needs ように, not たい or でしょう.
  • Distractors reuse other ように jobs. If nothing follows the blank, it is the wish; if an action follows, it is purpose (plain form).
