〜ように (purpose / so that)
you ni (mokuteki)
By Nihongo PathUpdated
Meaning
"so that…" — a purpose clause used with non-volitional verbs (potential, ない-form, なる, 分かる, 見える).
〜ように links a goal to the action you take: 忘れないように、メモする = I make a note so that I don't forget. The word before ように is the goal, and it is usually something you cannot simply decide to do: a potential verb (聞こえる, 読める), a ない-form (忘れない, 遅れない) or a change verb (なる, 治る, 分かる). The main clause after ように is what you actually do to reach that goal.
Everyday explanations of why you do something: speaking loudly so people can hear, taking medicine so you get better, writing furigana so children can read. Also in wishes at shrines (合格しますように) and in instructions (よく聞こえるように前に座ってください).
Formation
V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.
V-potential + ように: 読めるように, 聞こえるように, 分かるようにV-ない + ように: 忘れないように, 遅れないようにV-dictionary (non-volitional) + ように: なるように, 治るように, 間に合うようにThe subject of the ように-clause may differ from the main clause (子供が読めるように、私がふりがなをつける)
Visual diagram

| wrong mix | ない + ために | - | - | ×忘れないために → 忘れないように |
Natural examples
忘れないように、手帳に書きます。
わすれないように、てちょうに かきます。
I write it in my planner so I don't forget.
ない-form + ように: the goal is avoiding something.
後ろの人にも聞こえるように、大きい声で話した。
うしろの ひとにも きこえるように、おおきい こえで はなした。
I spoke loudly so the people at the back could hear too.
Potential 聞こえる + ように; the subject of the goal (後ろの人) differs from the doer (I).
早く治るように、薬を飲んでいます。
はやく なおるように、くすりを のんでいます。
I'm taking medicine so that I get better quickly.
Change verb 治る + ように: a state the speaker hopes for.
子供にも読めるように、漢字にふりがなをつけました。
こどもにも よめるように、かんじに ふりがなを つけました。
I added furigana to the kanji so that children can read them too.
Potential verb + ように; the person who reads (children) and the person who acts (I) are different.
会議に間に合うように、朝早く家を出た。
かいぎに まにあうように、あさ はやく いえを でた。
I left home early in the morning so as to be in time for the meeting.
間に合う is not something you simply decide to do, so it takes ように rather than ために.
Similar grammar and the difference
ために takes a deliberate action verb and needs the same subject (日本へ行くために貯金する). ように takes potential / ない / change verbs. Compare side by side
Same ように, but with する as the main verb: "make an effort to". In this lesson the main clause is any action. Compare side by side
Sentence-final ように expresses a prayer or wish (合格できますように). Same idea of a hoped-for result, without a main clause. Compare side by side
Common mistakes
- ✗
- 忘れないために、メモしました。
- ✓
- 忘れないように、メモしました。
- Why
- A ない-form goal takes ように. ために wants a deliberate action in the affirmative.
- ✗
- 日本語を話せるために、毎日練習しています。
- ✓
- 日本語が話せるように、毎日練習しています。
- Why
- Potential verbs are not deliberate actions, so they take ように. Note also that the object of a potential verb takes が.
- ✗
- 本を買うように、書店へ行った。
- ✓
- 本を買うために、書店へ行った。
- Why
- 買う is a deliberate action you decide to do, and the subject is the same, so ために is correct.
A quick test: if you could put the goal into a command ("buy!", "go!"), use ために; if not ("be able to hear!", "don't forget!", "get better!"), use ように. ように is usually followed by a comma in writing and a short pause in speech. In casual speech the goal clause may come after the action: 大きい声で話したよ、後ろの人にも聞こえるように.
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- In 文法形式 with ように / ために as options, look at the verb before the blank: a potential verb (読める, 聞こえる), a ない-form or なる points to ように.
- In 並べ替え, the ように chunk usually sits right after the goal verb and before the action clause; the goal is often 〜ない or 〜られる.
