By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

と marks the content of thoughts, speech, writing, hearing, or naming.

The particle と marks the content of what someone thinks, says, hears, writes or reads: 来ないと思う (I think he won't come), 「立入禁止」と書いてある (it says "No entry"), 「はる」と読む (it is read "haru"). Think of と as the closing quotation mark. The clause before と is in the plain form even when the sentence is polite: 行くと思います, not 行きますと思います. Nouns keep だ before と思う (学生だと思う).

Giving opinions (〜と思う), reporting speech (〜と言う), hearsay (〜と聞く), reading signs and messages (〜と書いてある), explaining readings and names (〜と読む / 〜と言う / 〜と呼ぶ), and passing on messages. Used everywhere and constantly.

Quoted content takes と, not を.

と思う is only for the speaker's own opinion in the present tense; for others use と思っている. In casual speech と becomes って: 来ないって聞いた, 「駅」って書いてある (lesson 86). Verbs that take と: 思う, 言う, 聞く, 書く, 読む, 呼ぶ, 伝える, 答える, 考える, 信じる.

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • If the blank precedes 思います, 言いました, 聞きました or 書いてあります, it is と and the preceding clause must be plain. Reject ます-forms before と.
  • After a noun, check for だ: 学生だと思う is correct; 学生と思う is a common distractor.
