〜と言っていました "(someone) said that…"

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Reports what a third person said; the standard N4 way to convey another's words.

〜と言っていました reports what someone else said, as a message: 田中さんは明日休むと言っていました = Tanaka said he'll be off tomorrow. The reported words go in the plain form before と. You can also quote directly with 「…」と言っていました. Compared with 言いました, which simply reports the act of speaking, 言っていました focuses on passing the content on to the listener.

Passing on what a third person said: at work, at school, at home. It is the standard N4 way to relay someone's words. In casual speech: 〜って言ってた. When changing a direct quote to indirect speech, adjust pronouns and politeness: 「私は行きます」→ 自分は行くと言っていた.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • Plain sentence + と言っていました: 休むと言っていました
  • Direct quote: 「…」と言っていました
  • Casual: 〜と言ってた / 〜って言ってた
  • Adjectives and nouns: いいと言っていた, 学生だと言っていた

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    田中さんは明日休みますと言っていました。
    ✓
    田中さんは明日休むと言っていました。
    Why
Indirect speech uses the plain form before と (unless quoting directly with 「」).
  • ✗
    田中さんは明日休むと言います。
    ✓
    田中さんは明日休むと言っていました。
    Why
言います is present / habitual; reporting past words needs 言っていました or 言いました.
  • ✗
    先生は「私の家に来なさい」と言っていた。→ 先生は私の家に来なさいと言っていた。
    ✓
    先生は先生の家に来るように言っていた。
    Why
When you change a direct quote to indirect, 私 (the teacher) must become 先生, and a command becomes 〜ように.

言っていました is preferred when you are passing on the message; 言いました stresses the moment of speaking. In casual conversation, って replaces と: 休むって言ってた. For someone senior you can use おっしゃっていました (honorific).

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • The form before と must be plain: options with ます / です inside the quote are wrong unless there are quotation marks.
  • Choose 言っていました over 言います when the sentence is about relaying a message (よ, ね, or a third person's plan).
