〜と伝えてください "please tell (someone) that…"

Asking someone to pass a message on to a third person.

〜と伝えてください asks someone to pass a message to a third person: 田中さんに、明日は休むと伝えてください = please tell Tanaka that I'll be off tomorrow. The person who should receive the message takes に, and the message goes in the plain form before と. More polite versions are 〜と伝えていただけませんか and 〜とお伝えください. If the message is a request ("tell him to call me"), use 〜ように伝えてください instead.

Phone calls, offices, schools: leaving a message when someone is out. Very common in business Japanese: 〜とお伝えください to a receptionist, 〜と伝えていただけますか on the phone. Casual: 〜と伝えて / 〜って言っておいて.

   とお伝えください: extra polite, to someone senior.

   伝えてくれませんか: a friendly request to pass the news to everyone.

   When Tanaka gets back, please tell him to call me.

   A request inside the message uses ように, not と.

   すみませんが、やまださんに、かいぎは じゅうじからだと つたえていただけますか。

   Excuse me, could you tell Yamada that the meeting is from ten?

   Noun + だ before と; いただけますか is the polite phone version.

  Indirect messages use the plain form before と.

On the phone: 〜と伝えていただけますか / お伝えいただけますか is the standard formula. 伝える is the verb for passing on messages; 言う is also possible (〜と言っておいてください) in casual speech. Add よろしく for a friendly touch: 田中さんによろしくと伝えてください (give my regards to Tanaka).
