Lesson 110 of 110

Transitive / intransitive verb pairs (自動詞・他動詞)

jidoushi / tadoushi

By Nihongo PathUpdated

Meaning

Japanese has paired verbs: the transitive (他動詞) takes an object with を and expresses someone doing the action; the intransitive (自動詞) takes が and expresses the change happening by itself. Choosing the right member of the pair is a core N4 skill.

Many Japanese verbs come in pairs. The intransitive verb (自動詞) describes a change that happens by itself and takes が: ドアが開く = the door opens. The transitive verb (他動詞) describes a person doing the action to something and takes を: ドアを開ける = (someone) opens the door. Learning the pairs (開く/開ける, 閉まる/閉める, つく/つける, 消える/消す, 壊れる/壊す…) lets you choose the right particle and the right verb. With ている and てある they describe states: 電気がついている = the light is on; 電気がつけてある = the light has been left on by someone.

Everywhere: describing what happened (窓が割れた) versus what someone did (窓を割った), explaining states (ドアが開いている), and giving instructions (窓を閉めてください). The choice also affects how you sound: 壊れた avoids blame; 壊した admits it.

Formation

V = verb, N = noun, A = adjective.

  • 自動詞: N が + verb (change by itself): ドアが開く, 電気が消える, 授業が始まる
  • 他動詞: (person は) N を + verb (someone acts): ドアを開ける, 電気を消す, 授業を始める
  • State: 自動詞 + ている (ドアが開いている = is open) / 他動詞 + てある (ドアが開けてある = has been opened on purpose)
  • Preparation: 他動詞 + ておく (ドアを開けておく = open it in advance)
  • Sound patterns: -aru/-eru (上がる/上げる), -u/-eru (開く/開ける), -reru/-su (壊れる/壊す), -ru/-su (直る/直す)

Similar grammar and the difference

  • 〜てある

Transitive verb + てある describes a state resulting from someone's deliberate action. This lesson gives the verb pairs the pattern is built on. Compare side by side

  • 〜ておく

Transitive verb + ておく = do in advance. Intransitive verbs are not used with ておく. Compare side by side

  • Passive form

Both 窓が壊れた and 窓が壊された have が, but the passive names an action done by someone; the intransitive just reports the change. Compare side by side

Common mistakes

  • ✗
    ドアを開きました。
    ✓
    ドアを開けました。/ ドアが開きました。
    Why
開く is intransitive and cannot take を. With を you need the transitive 開ける.
  • ✗
    電気がつけている。
    ✓
    電気がついている。/ 電気がつけてある。
    Why
つける is transitive; with が and ている you need the intransitive つく. If you want to say someone left it on, use つけてある.
  • ✗
    私はパソコンが壊した。
    ✓
    私はパソコンを壊した。
    Why
壊す is transitive: the object takes を. パソコンが壊れた is the intransitive version.

Some verbs have no partner and can be both (開く/ひらく); others like 食べる or 走る have no pair at all. The most tested pairs at N4: 開く/開ける, 閉まる/閉める, つく/つける, 消える/消す, 始まる/始める, 止まる/止める, 壊れる/壊す, 入る/入れる, 出る/出す, 落ちる/落とす, 決まる/決める, 見つかる/見つける. Intransitive + ている describes states you observe (窓が閉まっている); transitive + てある adds "someone did it for a reason".

JLPT N4 tips

On the exam

  • Look at the particle before the blank: が → intransitive, を → transitive. Then pick the correct member of the pair.
  • For てある the verb must be transitive even though the noun takes が (ドアが開けてある). For ている with a state, the verb is intransitive (ドアが開いている).
