Meaning
The beginning of an action.
V-ます stem + 始める means "start to do": 習い始める (start learning), 降り始める (start raining). It attaches to the stem, and 始める then conjugates normally as a Group 2 verb (始めます, 始めた, 始めて). It is neutral about how the action starts; for a sudden start use 〜出す. It works with actions you choose (勉強し始める) and with things that just happen (泣き始める, 咲き始める).
Talking about when a habit, hobby or job began (去年から日本語を習い始めた), describing weather and nature (雨が降り始めた, 桜が咲き始めた), and narrating the start of an event. Common in all registers.

Common mistakes
- ✗
- 日本語を習う始めた。
- ✓
- 日本語を習い始めた。
- Why
- 始める attaches to the ます-stem, not the dictionary form.
- ✗
- 来週から勉強し出します。
- ✓
- 来週から勉強し始めます。
- Why
- A planned future start cannot use 出す, which implies suddenness. Use 始める.
- ✗
- 雨が始めた。
- ✓
- 雨が降り始めた。
- Why
- 始める as a suffix needs a verb stem; 雨が始める alone is not natural. Say 降り始める.
The starting point is usually marked with から (去年から, 四月から) or given by a time expression. 〜始めたばかり (have only just started) and 〜始めてから (since starting) are useful combinations: 日本語を習い始めてから一年になる. The intransitive partner 始まる cannot take a verb stem: 授業が始まる (the class starts), but 授業を受け始める (I start attending).
JLPT N4 tips
On the exam
- Check the form before 始める: only the ます-stem is correct. Dictionary form + 始める and て-form + 始める are typical wrong options.
- If the sentence has a scheduled time (来週から, 四月に) the answer is 始める, not 出す.
